Arnica flowers contain caffeine-like substances with anti-inflammatory and toning properties, and are a remedy for bruising and wounds. In cosmetic formulations they help to reduce puffiness, for instance around the eyes. The extract can stimulate blood flow and boost circulation beneath the skin, helping to revitalize the complexion. Do not consume arnica in any form, as it may be toxic.
CREAM
Arnica cream and tincture usually contain infusions from the whole plant, including the root.
PLANT
The flowers contain carotenoids, a skin-protecting plant form of vitamin A, and antioxidant substances called flavonoids, which are in part responsible for its anti-inflammatory effects.
MACERATED OIL
An infusion of arnica flowers, the macerated oil (see below) can be used as a cosmetic conditioning ingredient.
MAKE YOUR OWN - Macerated oil
Pack a clean, sterile jar with your choice of herbs. Top up with a base oil such as olive, grapeseed, or sunflower. Store at room temperature and shake vigorously each day for 2-6 weeks to help infuse the oil. The oil will take on a dark golden color and have a distinctive "woody" aroma when it is fully infused. Strain the oil through cheesecloth into a clean, sterile bottle and cap tightly. Store in a cool, dark place.
